Breen loses 45 pounds!

I have long said that people who try to lose weight for a wedding, a high school reunion, or the like, will always put the weight back on. That is because they are trying to lose weight for the wrong reason and when that event passes, so does their motivation to maintain. It is those that pursue weight loss to be a healthier and happier person that succeed. The goal of health and happiness is a continual journey…a lifestyle. Breen Murphy came to Sensible Fitness with that goal. Breen has 4 kids age 8, 6, 3, and 1. He also works 50+ hours a week, but jokingly says the kids are the hard part of managing workouts and the healthy lifestyle.

I will let him tell the story from here….

“I joined SF in Feb 2022 during a rough patch when I was the heaviest I had ever been and generally felt lethargic and run down. I thought, “I shouldn’t feel like this at 36 years old.” At the time my wife was pregnant with our 4th child and I felt I owed it to her and my kids to be in better shape and have more energy to be a more impactful spouse and parent.

I knew what I had to do; I had to get in the gym. However, over the years, I’d become notorious for stopping and starting workout routines and saying the right things, but never really following through. I hated working out; I wasn’t going to do this by myself. I needed accountability and an appointment to show up. So as a working dad with a gaggle of young kids, there was only one option: 6AM with a trainer. I made the decision to invest in my health and fitness.

For the first 6 months I didn’t lose a pound. My body composition definitely started to change, but I was discouraged. Then I made the decision to prioritize diet as well. I started counting calories for the first time in my life. MyFitnessPal became my go to app after every meal. It was very eye opening understanding what I was consuming and how it impacted my mood and waistline.

I lost 20lbs in 3 months. I started to feel better, and even increased my time in the gym from 3 days to 4 days per week.

I continued the same strategy and shed the next 25lbs over the next year. I am in the gym 4-5 days per week and training for something I never imagined for myself. A Murph. Given my last name, I thought it an appropriate goal so I am now on the quest to reach a fitness goal I wouldn’t have even considered possible in February 2022.

To that end, I’m incredibly grateful to Doug and all of the trainers that I’ve had the opportunity to work with. Notably, Luis who has been my 6AM task master since he joined :) I’d be remiss if I didn’t also mention Morgan on most Saturdays, Jordan, Alec, and Will who’ve all had a part in the journey. There’s also Jeff who’s always around and providing the comic relief and the sole source of quality football conversation (Go Browns!).

Thanks for everything, Doug.
