Researchers in London said that patients who listened to music report less anxiety and needed less pain medication after surgery.
The team reviewed 70 trials that involved 7,000 patients and compared a wide variety of soothing music against:
~ undisturbed bed rest
~headphones with no music
~ white noise
~ routine care
Dr. Catherine Meads, the lead author said that Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon help soothe her pain three hours after surgery. While research showed an effect on pain and stress, it did not reduce hospital stays.
One of the more interesting surprises from all this is that the music worked when the patient was under general anesthetic. I don’t know about you, but Dark Side of the Moon is general anesthetic for me!
